Young Gunz’s second single, “What U Say”, reached #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #2 on the Hot Rap Tracks. The song features rapper Jay-Z and was produced by Just Blaze. To coincide with the release of the song, State Property released “The Story of Hail Mary (Intermission)”, a freestyle on “What U Say” beat that utilized the same edit from “What U Say” featuring Jay-Z but featured members of State Property, as well as Just Blaze who produced the beat used for “What U Say”. The single debuted at #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #29 on the Hot Rap Tracks and generated good reviews at the time of its release, though once again the song didn’t make much of an impact on the charts[8] the following month, “What U Say” was featured on the Madison Avenue Productions single, “New York”, by rapper/actor 50 Cent.[9]
The group’s third single, “Tune 4 Dat”, was released on March 20, 2004. The single’s video was directed by Fred Brathwaite, whose work on “Set It Off” linked him to The Game and Young Gunz when he was shooting videos for West Coast rappers.[10] The single debuted at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #24 on the Hot Rap Tracks charts.[11] The single’s video was filmed in Miami, Florida.[11] The song was included on their album, Chain Gang, Vol. 2. The song was included as the first single in the NBA 2K basketball video game series. To coincide with the album release, Young Gunz appeared on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[12] and appeared as playable characters in NBA 2K2.[13]
Young Gunz released their debut album, Tough Luv, on April 27, 2004. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, selling 127,000 copies in its first week. It was the highest debut of any hip-hop lead single on the Billboard 200 in 2004. Its first single, “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” currently holds the record for the highest debuting lead single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
