The tabs for your images are at the top of the screen, and you can browse through your files at lightning speed. The advanced spreadsheets and editing tools are still real luxuries, and Lightroom is (thankfully) still keeping the essentials at the forefront of its feature set.

Why Photoshop came to the web

The web is like the wild west. The evolution of the way that we share video and other media continues apace, quickly moving from a web of static sites in the late 1990s to a web of dynamic platforms, APIs and programming languages in the mid-aughts. It has been an exciting time ever since, and Adobe’s goal has always been to empower web authors to create the next generation of dynamic web sites and applications. Adobe’s go-to platform for this is web app-oriented vector graphics software, the Adobe Platform.

One day on a whim, Adobe decided to try and make Photoshop a web app. They partnered with Google, Firefox, and the world’s largest browser, content ecosystem, and web performance team, to come up with an implementation that tackled many of the unique requirements that follow in the wake of a platform shift. The Adobe Platform team set out to add web app programming model to their existing technology stack (JavaScript/WebAssembly/Canvas/CSS/html) that powers Creative Suite and web apps.

To do this, they had to incorporate non-traditional web responses to the most common features of Photoshop, including: Mobile H.264, Per-Bitrate, Per-Channel, and Per-Pixel bitrate encoding. They also had to implement and deploy a server-side script, web workers, dynamic 3D assets and resources, behavioral and responsive features, and other similar technologies from the CMF app business unit to build the best and most complete browser-based Adobe Photoshop app they could possibly imagine.

“We want everyone to experience the benefits of the rich platform that is Adobe Photoshop on the web, including new ways to work, get inspired, and share what you’ve created,” says Randy Dunlop of the Adobe Platform team. “Our goal is to make Photoshop the best web app you’ve ever used.”

You can continue to edit your raw files and render layers using the basic Adobe file formats (TIFF, PSD, PEF, JPEG) or output images to a variety of formats, including JPEG, PNG, and GIF. The Web-based assets you produce using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements remain unique in their HTML-based formats, even if you save in the common PSD or PDF formats. You can continue to export any layers in a given image in the older update, relying on Adobe Bridge to check whether layer palettes need to be updated for the newer version.

If you need to view a PSD or PDF document in a web browser, you should be able to do so, though you may see some differences from viewing the exported version in toolbars in Photoshop or its Elements counterpart.

If you have Creative Cloud versions of the software, you can continue to use those versions as long as they are not linked to digital assets created with Photoshop versions prior to Photoshop CC. In most cases, Photoshop CC will upgrade smoothly to the latest version of Photoshop, once you have downloaded and installed the software.

Aerial Layers has both vector and raster versions for those who are interested in a more DIY approach, and doesn’t require a subscription to Photoshop. It works like a treasure chest of different fixes and tools to include in your design workflows. It’s perfect for when you want to experiment with slightly different elements in your projects. The Light and Color Modify panels are now present in all the other tabs in Photoshop. This feature is particularly useful if you want to make quick adjustments to your color and light. Both have been added to the Layers panel, and they can also be found in the Adjustment controls in the Adjustments panel, Adjustment Layers panel and in the Content-Aware Makeup panel.

You can now create one-to-many compositions. If you have moved over to the new Photoshop Elements app, you already have the ability to easily create one-to-many compositions. So no need to rid yourself of those old layers in your comps. You can just create new layers in the canvas.

Even though some people are excited about the prospect of the free Lightroom update, Adobe isn’t yet offering plans for Lightroom, which is good because the company says it won’t force organisations to use its subscription services.
