After spending months comparing the best photo editing programs for the iPad and iPhone, I’ve gone back to Photoshop Elements on my PC. In my opinion Photoshop Elements works for basic editing and management, while Photoshop is superior at producing professional-looking work. Elements also has the benefit of being entirely free and ad-supported. That said, at the price point of only $60 per year, Elements does offer a high quality editing package that’s more than adequate for most basic image goals.
After using Photoshop for years, I finally decided to try Elements. While Elements has some good features, couldn’t do my “photo realism” work, and has some technical glitches that have annoyed me, it is no Photoshop. Photoshop is much more versatile and powerful, and it is generally the choice for more professional editing, like photo color adjustment, correcting exposure, and other things. With PS, you can also do amazing things like elements, like crazily complex picture collage.
I like to use Elements when I’m doing basic editing like cropping and resizing. But, whenever I need to get serious about things like correcting exposure, correcting color, and sharpening photos, I use Photoshop.
I’m an old-school Mac user, so it doesn’t really matter which tool you prefer, but generally, for the ‘average’ photo editing, I’d suggest either Photoshop or Elements. For cooking with DNG images, I like Aperture.
Why is there so much hate on Photoshop? There are plenty of other awesome photo editing programs out there, but there are also tons of tools on Photoshop for doing just about anything. To be honest, if you want to do anything more complex than cover crops or texts, you’ll usually end up on Photoshop.
