First, you’ll need to download the Adobe Photoshop software. Once you have, you’ll be presented with the installer. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. Once the installation is complete, you’ll be prompted to activate the software. If you are in the United States, you must click on the link that says, “I agree to the terms and conditions of Adobe Software Licensing Agreement”. However, if you are outside the United States, you will not see this link, and it is not necessary.
Just for fun, I dropped in here from Digital Arts Magazine where I am currently reviewing the new version of Adobe Photoshop. I’m well into my second day using it, and I’m finding it to be an excellent tool. Loads of features, and you have almost all of them without much customizing to the OOTB options. The learning curve takes some getting used to, but you get the most out of it.

I have mixed feelings about Adobe Photoshop. My typical workflow is to start with CS5 and then beta roll through every version until I’m happy with it. I prefer PS over LR, because I find it easier in many ways. I also find it more intuitive. I use my computer as an editor or photo library, not as a set of tools to do layout, so I’ve never seen the need to use as many of the features of Photoshop. The same can be said for MS Office. I never really got into the OS revolution that is MS Office, preferring to use Word for long stretches and designing in Photoshop only when side project design work gets underway. All of this changes when I design for the web.
The one thing that is a deal killer for me is the lack of choices to control the depth of the tonal range in Adobe’s image editor. After editing an image in PS, I’d upload it to a client’s website and be forced to tone it down on the client’s website for the client’s guidelines, or leave it as is. Which is fine, but it’s not what I like to do personally, and I feel that it stifles my creative freedom when I have to go back to my tools for such a simple issue. This is the same reason that I’m not a fan of web applications that allow full creativity when publishing at the client’s website. We need to require people to become accustomed to the way we work, not the other way around.
Wish Adobe had more of the flexibility in their tool pipeline. Oh well, perhaps I’ll just run PS CC and web design together in one OS window and publish those as a different identity in another window. It would be fun to try. I could certainly style and design for the web in PS, and that is likely to be my next major project.
